Brian Christian

Brian Christian

After thirty-two years of band directing in public schools of Texas, Bryan Christian is now continuing to prioritize relationships through music and servant leadership in his work as a clinician, a consultant and mentor for The Docentus Group, a guest lecturer, and a performance evaluator.  He was the first Director of Bands at Vista Ridge High School which opened in 2003 in Leander ISD and remained there until his retirement in 2023.  His career highlights include performing with his Wind Ensemble in the 2014 Midwest Clinic, his marching band being named Grand Champions in the 2018 Texas UIL 6A State Marching Band Contest, their performance in the 2023 Rose Parade, their receiving the Sudler Sheild in 2017 and the Sudler Flag in 2021.  Among his most cherished memories will always be the performances with the Vista Ridge Wind Ensemble.  Additionally, some of his most formative and treasured musical memories are performing as a graduate student and clarinetist in the 1990 TMEA Convention and the 1991 CBDNA Convention with Dr. John Whitwell’s Stephen F. Austin State University Symphonic Band and with Dr. Reveli and Dr. Husa as Guest Conductors in those respective concerts.  Mr. Christian feels extremely fortunate to have been an undergraduate student at Abilene Christian University where his conducting teacher, Gary Lewis, his studio and methods teacher, Fred Allen, his life-long mentor, John Whitwell, and his dear, life-long friend, Eric Wilson significantly influenced his teaching career.

Mr. Christian married his college sweetheart, Cheryl, who was an oboist in the band at ACU and who is currently a 7thGrade Math Teacher.  They will have been married for 37 years this coming June.  They love to watch movies together and, while they are enjoying their “empty nest,” they relish time spent with their daughters, Caroline and Cassie, who were in his Vista Ridge Wind Ensemble and who continued to play in college at ACU, and who both currently live and work in Abilene, Texas.

While he has always enjoyed the occasional round of golf with friends, skiing on nearby lakes or not-so-nearby snow-covered mountains, Bryan now spends as much of his new-found “free time” as possible on his family’s cattle ranch in Central Texas, hunting, fishing, and just being in the beautiful Hill Country.  He is grateful to his wife and daughters for their unconditional love and support; to his parents, Jerry and Sheila Christian, for being models of and instilling in him an enduring faith and love for others; and to God for His great and eternal love and faithfulness.
